Required Driver’s License/Documents for Your Ride

To enjoy Akiba Kart, one of the following driver’s licenses is required.
Please ensure to check below and bring the necessary document on the day of your tour.
*Please bring all originals

    1. Japanese Driver’s License

    This is a standard Class 1 regular vehicle license issued by the Prefectural Public Safety Commission of Japan.
    It is also possible to drive with an automatic car limited license.

    2. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) Driver’s Permit + US Military ID

    Requires simultaneous presentation of SOFA driver’s permit for personal vehicle operation and a US military ID card with a photo attached.

    3. Foreign Driver’s License (from specific countries) + Japanese Translation + Passport

    Note: Only valid for driver’s licenses from specific six countries (see below)

    • Switzerland
    • Germany
    • France
    • Belgium
    • Monaco
    • Taiwan

    Requires presentation of driver’s license from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, along with a Japanese translation issued by designated agencies (valid for less than 1 year since entry to Japan) and a passport.

    ATTENTION!!

    Valid translations are issued by respective country’s embassy/consulate in Japan, Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), ZIPLUS Co., Ltd., Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, or General German Automobile Club (ADAC).

    4. International Driver’s Permit + Passport

    Note: Valid only if issued by Geneva Convention member countries. Requires presentation of an international driver’s permit and passport.

    An international driver’s license and passport must be presented.
    The international driver’s license is valid for one year from the date of issue (please check the issue date) and can be used for driving in Japan for one year from the date of entry (please check the entry date stamped in your passport).
    Only international driver’s licenses issued under the Geneva Convention (1949) are accepted. Licenses based on the Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943), or Vienna Convention (1968) are not valid for driving in Japan.

    ATTENTION!!

    • You cannot drive with an international driving permit issued in a format other than the one based on the Geneva Convention (1949). It is limited to permits issued by Geneva Convention member countries under the Geneva Convention.
      You cannot drive with an international driving permit issued in a format not based on the Geneva Convention (1949).
    • You cannot drive with an international driving permit issued by unauthorized agencies, private companies, or private websites.
      Digital Versions of IDP are Not Accepted in Japan by law. The IDP must be original documents (booklet format).
      Also you cannot drive in Japan with an international driving permit issued by unauthorized agencies or private companies (such as IDL, IAA, KIDA, IDD, IADA, ITDL, etc.).
